IIT JAM, the Joint Admission Test for Masters, is the national exam for admission to M.Sc, joint M.Sc-PhD, M.Sc-M.Tech and similar postgraduate science programs at the IITs. It is conducted each year by one IIT on behalf of all of them, and the organizing institute for JAM 2027 is IIT Kharagpur. IISc Bengaluru and many NITs, IISERs and other centrally funded institutes also use JAM scores.

JAM has seven subject papers: Biotechnology, Chemistry, Economics, Geology, Mathematical Statistics, Mathematics and Physics. Each is a 3-hour computer-based test with 60 questions worth 100 marks, split into multiple-choice, multiple-select and numerical-answer questions. What is IIT JAM?

JAM is the main route into science master’s programs at the IITs, which together offer a few thousand seats. Admission to IIT programs is handled centrally through the Joint Admission Processing System (JOAPS) after the result. Institutes outside the IIT system, including IISc and NITs, take JAM scores into their own admission processes; NITs and several other institutes admit through CCMN counseling.

The organizing IIT rotates. It sets the paper, runs the application portal and publishes results, so always follow the website named for your cycle.

IIT JAM eligibility

Appearing for JAM is open to anyone who has a Bachelor’s degree or is in the final year of one. Admission rules are stricter and vary by program.

• You must have completed a Bachelor’s degree or be appearing in the final-year exam in the JAM year.
• There is no age limit, and Indian and foreign nationals can apply.
• There is no minimum mark requirement to sit the test, per recent brochures; each admitting institute and program lists its own minimum educational qualifications, including required subjects.
• You can take one paper, or two papers if they are held in different sessions.

IIT JAM exam pattern

Every JAM paper follows the same structure. Section A has single-correct multiple-choice questions, Section B has multiple-select questions where one or more options are correct, and Section C has numerical-answer questions typed using an on-screen keypad. A virtual scientific calculator is available.

The paper is set in English.

IIT JAM marking scheme

Negative marking applies only in Section A. For MSQs, you get marks only if you select all correct options and no wrong ones; there is no partial credit and no penalty.

• MCQ (Section A): +1 or +2 for correct; -1/3 for a wrong 1-mark answer and -2/3 for a wrong 2-mark answer.
• MSQ (Section B): +2 only for a fully correct response; no negative marking.
• NAT (Section C): +1 or +2 for a correct value within the allowed range; no negative marking.
• Unanswered questions score zero.

IIT JAM syllabus

Each paper has its own detailed syllabus on the official site, pitched at the undergraduate level. Here is what each paper broadly covers.

• Mathematics (MA): real analysis, linear algebra, calculus of several variables, differential equations, vector calculus, group theory.
• Physics (PH): mechanics, oscillations and waves, electricity and magnetism, optics, thermodynamics, modern physics, solid state and electronics basics.
• Chemistry (CY): physical, organic and inorganic chemistry at B.Sc level.
• Mathematical Statistics (MS): about 40% mathematics and 60% probability and statistics.
• Biotechnology (BT): biology, chemistry, mathematics and physics at undergraduate level.
• Economics (EN): microeconomics, macroeconomics, statistics, mathematics for economics and Indian economy.
• Geology (GG): earth science, geomorphology, mineralogy, petrology, structural geology, stratigraphy and applied geology.

IIT JAM result and colleges accepting JAM score

The result gives your marks and All India Rank for each paper. Scores are generally valid for the admission cycle of that year only.

After results, you apply for IIT programs through JOAPS, choosing programs in order of preference; seats are offered in rounds by rank, category and program eligibility. IISc Bengaluru, NITs, IISERs such as Pune and Bhopal, IIEST Shibpur and several other institutes use JAM scores through their own portals or through CCMN, so check each one’s admission notice.

How to prepare for IIT JAM

JAM rewards clear concepts and careful calculation. Half the marks sit in Section A, where negative marking applies, and the other half in sections with no penalty.

• Map the official syllabus for your paper topic by topic and cover your standard undergraduate textbooks first.
• Attempt NAT and MSQ questions fully, as they carry no penalty. For MSQs, be sure of every option you tick.
• In Section A, answer 2-mark MCQs only when you are fairly confident, since a wrong one costs two-thirds of a mark.
• Solve at least the last eight to ten years of JAM papers for your subject; topics repeat in style.
• Practice on the virtual calculator in mock tests so it does not slow you down.
• Recording mock scores by section in Kosuki can show whether MCQ penalties are costing you rank.

How to apply for IIT JAM

1. Go to the JOAPS portal linked from the official JAM website when registration opens.
2. Register with your email and mobile number.
3. Fill in personal and academic details and choose one or two test papers.
4. Select exam city preferences.
5. Upload your photograph, signature and any category or PwD certificates.
6. Pay the fee online, submit, and download the admit card when released.
