JNVST Class 9 is the lateral entry selection test for admission to Class 9 in Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalayas. Navodaya Vidyalaya Samiti conducts it every year to fill seats in Class 9 that have fallen vacant. Selected students join a free, residential CBSE school in their own district and continue there until Class 12.

The test is a pen-and-paper exam of two and a half hours, with 100 objective questions in English, Hindi, Mathematics and General Science. Seats are few, often only a handful per school, so the competition is close.

What is JNVST Class 9?

Navodaya Vidyalayas admit most students in Class 6. Over the years, some students leave, and the Class 9 selection test fills those vacancies through lateral entry. A similar test exists for Class 11.

Because it only fills vacant seats, the number of seats is announced school by school and changes every year. Some schools have no Class 9 vacancy in a given year. Check the vacancy list for your district before you start preparing seriously.

JNVST Class 9 eligibility

The core rules from recent notifications are below. The date of birth window moves forward by one year each cycle.

• The student must be studying in Class 8 in a government or government-recognized school during the current academic session.
• The student must study Class 8 in the same district where the Navodaya Vidyalaya is located, and be a resident of that district.
• Date of birth must fall in the window given in the notification. In recent cycles this has worked out to roughly 13 to 15 years of age; check the exact dates in the current notice.
• Students who already passed Class 8 in an earlier year are not eligible.

JNVST Class 9 exam pattern

The JNVST Class 9 exam pattern is a single objective paper. Questions are based on the NCERT syllabus of Classes 6 to 8. Answers are marked on an OMR sheet with a ballpoint pen.

JNVST Class 9 marking scheme

• Each question carries 1 mark.
• Recent notices have not provided for negative marking, so attempt all 100 questions.
• Mathematics and Science together carry 70 marks, which decides most of the ranking.
• The paper runs for two and a half hours without a break, which gives about 90 seconds per question.

JNVST Class 9 syllabus

The syllabus follows Class 8 level. The notification and the official website give a subject-wise outline. The main areas are these.

• English: reading comprehension, grammar (tenses, parts of speech, articles, prepositions, voice and narration), vocabulary, synonyms and antonyms.
• Hindi: passage comprehension, grammar (sandhi, samas, muhavare, paryayvachi, vilom), and correct usage.
• Mathematics: rational numbers, linear equations in one variable, squares and square roots, cubes and cube roots, exponents, algebraic expressions and factorization, comparing quantities, mensuration, understanding shapes, data handling and graphs.
• General Science: crop production, microorganisms, materials (metals and non-metals, synthetic fibers), combustion, cells, reproduction, force and pressure, friction, sound, light, electric current and its effects, and natural phenomena.

JNVST Class 9 result and admission

The JNVST Class 9 result is published as a list of selected candidates for each Navodaya Vidyalaya, usually a few months after the exam, on the official website. Selection is made in order of merit against the vacancies in that school, following reservation rules.

Selected students must report to the Navodaya Vidyalaya with documents such as the Class 8 marksheet or school certificate, date of birth proof and residence proof. Admission is final only after verification.

How to prepare for JNVST Class 9

Seats are few, so strong candidates often score well above 80. The best approach is complete coverage of the Class 6 to 8 NCERT books and high accuracy.

• Start with Mathematics and Science, which carry 70 of the 100 marks. Finish all NCERT exercises for Classes 7 and 8, then Class 6 basics.
• In Science, focus on definitions, examples and simple reasoning. Many questions are direct from NCERT text.
• For English and Hindi, practice one comprehension passage a day and a short grammar set. These 30 marks are quick to gain.
• Solve previous JNVST Class 9 papers to learn the level and repeat topics.
• Take full-length timed mocks on an OMR sheet so you finish 100 questions in two and a half hours with time to check.

How to apply for JNVST Class 9

1. Watch navodaya.gov.in for the Class 9 lateral entry notice, usually released in the autumn.
2. Check the vacancy list for the Navodaya Vidyalaya in your district.
3. Register on the online admission portal linked from the website and fill in the student’s details.
4. Upload the photograph, signatures and the certificate from the current school in the required format.
5. Submit the form and download the admit card when it is issued.
