WBJEE (West Bengal Joint Entrance Examination) is the state engineering entrance exam conducted by the West Bengal Joint Entrance Examinations Board (WBJEEB). It leads to B.E. and B.Tech admissions, along with pharmacy and some architecture seats, at government, university and private institutes in West Bengal, including Jadavpur University.

WBJEE is a pen-and-paper exam with two papers: Mathematics, and Physics with Chemistry. It has 155 questions and 200 marks. Its unusual feature is three categories of questions, each with its own marking rule. Knowing how those categories work is the first step to a good score.

What is WBJEE?

WBJEEB was set up by the Government of West Bengal to run common entrance tests for professional courses in the state. WBJEE is its main undergraduate engineering test. Scores are used for state government colleges, state universities such as Jadavpur University and the University of Calcutta, and many self-financing private institutes.

The exam produces two kinds of rank: a General Merit Rank for engineering and technology, and a Pharmacy Merit Rank for pharmacy courses. Counseling and seat allotment for all participating institutes are run by the Board.

WBJEE eligibility

The eligibility rules below are based on the latest information bulletin. Some institutes, such as Jadavpur University, set higher marks requirements of their own.

• Indian citizen. OCI and some other categories may be eligible for unreserved All India seats only.
• Minimum age of 17 years by the end of the admission year. There is no upper age limit for most courses.
• Class 12 passed (or appearing) with Physics and Mathematics as compulsory subjects, plus one of Chemistry, Biology, Biotechnology, Computer Science or another approved subject.
• At least 45% aggregate in these three subjects (40% for reserved categories), and at least 30% in English.
• West Bengal domicile is required for state government seats and for reserved-category benefits.

WBJEE exam pattern

WBJEE has two papers on the same day. Paper 1 is Mathematics, worth 100 marks. Paper 2 combines Physics and Chemistry, 50 marks each. Answers are marked on an OMR sheet with a blue or black ballpoint pen. PwD candidates get extra time per paper.

Each subject has three categories. Category I questions have one correct answer and carry 1 mark. Category II questions have one correct answer and carry 2 marks. Category III questions can have one or more correct answers and carry 2 marks.

WBJEE marking scheme

Each category has its own penalty. Read Category III carefully: marks depend on choosing all correct options and no wrong ones.

• Category I: +1 for a correct answer, minus 1/4 for a wrong answer.
• Category II: +2 for a correct answer, minus 1/2 for a wrong answer.
• Category III: no negative marking. Full marks require marking all correct options with no incorrect option. In past bulletins, partial marks were given when only some correct options were marked and no wrong option was chosen.
• Unanswered questions get zero in every category.

WBJEE syllabus

The syllabus is based on the Class 11 and Class 12 curriculum of the West Bengal Council of Higher Secondary Education and is published with the information bulletin.

• Mathematics: algebra (complex numbers, quadratic equations, sequences, permutations and combinations, binomial theorem, matrices), trigonometry, coordinate geometry in two and three dimensions, calculus, vectors and probability.
• Physics: measurement, mechanics, gravitation, properties of matter, heat and thermodynamics, oscillations and waves, electrostatics, current electricity, magnetism, electromagnetic induction, optics, and modern physics.
• Chemistry: atomic structure, chemical bonding, states of matter, thermodynamics, equilibrium, electrochemistry, kinetics, periodic table and inorganic chemistry, coordination compounds, and organic chemistry including functional groups and biomolecules.

WBJEE result, rank and counseling

The Board releases a provisional answer key after the exam and invites objections before finalizing the result. The result gives your rank. The General Merit Rank covers engineering, and the Pharmacy Merit Rank covers pharmacy. When scores are tied, marks in Mathematics usually decide the order for the engineering rank.

After the result, the Board runs online counseling in rounds. You register, fill choices of institutes and branches, and seats are allotted by rank, category and domicile. Colleges accepting WBJEE scores include Jadavpur University, University of Calcutta affiliated technology departments, government engineering colleges and many private institutes in the state.

How to prepare for WBJEE

Mathematics alone is half the total marks, so it should drive your plan. The category system also changes how you attempt the paper.

• Give Mathematics the most time. 75 questions in 2 hours means under 2 minutes each, so drill calculus, coordinate geometry and algebra for speed.
• Attempt Category III questions with confidence. There is no negative marking, so mark the options you are sure about rather than leaving them blank.
• In Category I and II, guess only after eliminating options. A wrong 1-mark answer costs a quarter mark.
• For Paper 2, balance Physics and Chemistry equally. Chemistry questions are often quicker, so use them to save time for numerical Physics.
• Practice on OMR sheets. Bubbling carefully and quickly is a real skill in a pen-and-paper test.
• Solve previous years’ WBJEE papers to learn the question style, then take full mocks with both papers on the same day. You can record your mock scores in Kosuki to spot trends.

2. Register with your details and generate an application number.
3. Fill in the application form, including academic details and domicile status.
4. Upload your photo, signature and required documents.
5. Pay the fee online and download the confirmation page.
6. Download your admit card before the exam.
