The AMU Entrance Exam, officially the AMU admission test, is conducted by Aligarh Muslim University through its Controller of Examinations. AMU, a central university in Aligarh, Uttar Pradesh, uses its own tests for most of its undergraduate, postgraduate and diploma programs, and also for admission to classes in its schools.

A smaller set of programs uses CUET UG, and medical and dental programs use NEET. Each AMU test is program-specific, typically objective and around two hours long. What is the AMU Entrance Exam?

AMU runs one of the largest sets of in-house admission tests of any Indian university. Each year the Controller of Examinations releases application forms and a guide to admissions listing every program, its eligibility and whether it uses AMU’s own test.

In the 2026 cycle, many programs, including B.Tech, B.Com, BBA, BA LLB and a range of BA and B.Sc. programs, admitted students through AMU’s own tests. Some programs, such as several BA honors language programs, a few B.Sc. programs and B.Voc courses, used CUET UG. MBBS, BDS and nursing use NEET. AMU also holds tests for Class 9 and Class 11 admission in its schools.

AMU Entrance eligibility

The guide to admissions sets eligibility for every program. Common patterns include:

Undergraduate programs: Class 12 or equivalent with the required subjects and minimum aggregate marks, often around 50 percent
Postgraduate programs: a relevant bachelor’s degree with minimum marks set per program
Students appearing in their qualifying exam can usually apply
You must score at least 20 percent in the admission test to be considered
AMU follows its own reservation and quota rules, including seats for students who studied at AMU and categories such as sports and NCC, as set out in the guide

There is no single AMU paper. Each program has its own test built around the subjects it needs. The common features are:

AMU Entrance marking scheme

Marking varies by program, so read the syllabus and instructions for your test. Keep these points in mind:

Each question usually carries equal marks
Some tests deduct marks for wrong answers (the B.Tech test has deducted 0.25 per wrong answer); the admit card and question booklet state the rule
Scoring below 20 percent makes you ineligible regardless of rank
AMU releases answer keys and allows objections before final results

AMU Entrance syllabus

AMU publishes a syllabus for each admission test on the Controller of Examinations website. Broadly:

B.Tech: physics, chemistry and mathematics at Class 12 level
B.Sc. and science diplomas: Class 12 physics, chemistry, and biology or mathematics
B.Com and BBA: accountancy, business studies, economics, mathematics, English and general awareness
BA LLB: English, general knowledge, current affairs, legal aptitude and reasoning
BA programs: general knowledge, English, reasoning and humanities topics
Master’s programs: undergraduate subjects in the relevant discipline

AMU result and admission

Results are released program by program as merit lists. For many programs, AMU then runs counseling where you register, fill choices where relevant and get seats by rank, followed by document checks.

Some programs also run later lists if seats remain. Keep your documents ready and check the admissions site often during the result season.

How to prepare for the AMU Entrance Exam

AMU tests are close to the school or undergraduate syllabus, so thorough textbook study pays off. Past papers are the best guide to the level.

Download the syllabus for your exact program and note how many subjects it covers
Revise from Class 11 and 12 NCERT books for undergraduate tests; for master’s tests, use your degree textbooks
Solve previous AMU admission test papers; question styles repeat year to year
Practice general knowledge and English regularly if your test includes them
For B.Tech, practice PCM speed; for BA LLB, build a current affairs file for the past year
Take timed mocks on OMR sheets if your test is on paper
Do not ignore any section: the 20 percent minimum is on the whole test, but weak sections drag your rank down

AMU Entrance FAQs

Does AMU take admission through CUET?

Only for some programs. In the 2026 cycle, a set of BA honors, B.Sc. and B.Voc programs used CUET UG, while many others used AMU’s own admission tests.

Is AMU B.Tech admission through JEE Main?

No. AMU has used its own B.Tech admission test in recent cycles, a pen-and-paper paper of about 100 questions in 2 hours. Confirm the route in the current guide to admissions.

What is the minimum qualifying mark in the AMU entrance exam?

You must score at least 20 percent in the admission test to be eligible for admission, in addition to the program’s academic eligibility.

Is the AMU entrance exam online or offline?

Most AMU admission tests have been held in pen-and-paper mode in recent years. The admit card confirms the mode for your test.

Where are AMU entrance test centers?
