KCET (Karnataka Common Entrance Test) is the state entrance exam conducted by the Karnataka Examinations Authority (KEA). It leads to engineering and technology admissions in Karnataka, along with farm science, pharmacy and several other professional courses, at government, university, aided and private institutes.

KCET is a pen-and-paper test with four subject papers of 60 questions each, and no negative marking. For engineering, your rank is based equally on your KCET marks and your Class 12 marks in Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics. That makes KCET different from most entrance exams, and it shapes how you should prepare.

What is KCET?

KCET is how Karnataka fills government-quota seats in its professional colleges. KEA conducts the test, publishes ranks and runs the counseling for all participating institutes. Engineering students write Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics. Students aiming for courses like farm science, pharmacy or other life-science programs write Biology as well, depending on the course.

Medical and dental seats in Karnataka are allotted through KEA using NEET ranks, and architecture uses NATA scores, so KCET itself is mainly used for engineering and a range of non-medical professional courses.

KCET eligibility

Rules are set in the KEA information bulletin each year. For engineering, the recent criteria were:

• Class 12 (2nd PUC) or equivalent passed, or appearing, with English as one language and Physics and Mathematics as compulsory subjects.
• One more subject from Chemistry, Biotechnology, Biology, Electronics or Computer Science.
• At least 45% in Physics, Mathematics and the optional subject together, and 40% for reserved categories.
• To claim government-quota seats as a Karnataka candidate, you must meet the state’s study and residence rules, which are listed in the bulletin.
• Horanadu and Gadinadu Kannadiga candidates must also take a separate Kannada language test.

KCET exam pattern

KCET is held over two days. Each subject is a separate paper of 60 multiple-choice questions and 80 minutes. Engineering candidates take three papers. Biology is taken by those applying for courses that need it.

80 minutes for 60 questions gives you 80 seconds per question, which is more generous than most entrance tests. Most questions are direct and close to the state PUC textbooks.

KCET marking scheme and rank calculation

Scoring is straightforward, but ranking for engineering blends two sources of marks.

• Each correct answer: 1 mark.
• No negative marking for wrong answers.
• If more than one option is marked for a question, it gets no marks.
• Engineering rank: 50% weight to KCET marks in Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics, and 50% to your Class 12 marks in the same subjects.
• Other courses use their own combinations of subjects, as listed in the bulletin.
• The Kannada language test for eligible candidates carries 50 marks and is held separately.

KCET syllabus

The syllabus is based on the Karnataka 1st and 2nd PUC science curriculum, which closely follows NCERT. Both years are included.

• Physics: units and measurement, kinematics, laws of motion, work and energy, rotational motion, gravitation, properties of matter, thermodynamics, oscillations and waves, electrostatics, current electricity, magnetism, electromagnetic induction, AC, optics, dual nature, atoms and nuclei, semiconductors.
• Chemistry: basic concepts, atomic structure, periodic classification, bonding, states of matter, thermodynamics, equilibrium, redox, solutions, electrochemistry, kinetics, block elements, coordination compounds, and organic chemistry through biomolecules.
• Mathematics: sets, relations and functions, trigonometry, complex numbers, linear inequalities, permutations and combinations, binomial theorem, sequences, conic sections, limits, matrices and determinants, calculus, differential equations, vectors, 3D geometry, linear programming and probability.
• Biology: diversity of life, cell biology, plant and human physiology, reproduction, genetics and evolution, biology in human welfare, biotechnology, ecology.

KCET result and counseling

KEA publishes a provisional answer key, takes objections, and then releases ranks. Your engineering rank appears only after your Class 12 marks are recorded, because they count for half the rank.

Admissions happen through KEA’s online counseling. You complete document verification, enter options for colleges and courses, and seats are allotted in rounds. Colleges accepting KCET ranks include government engineering colleges, university departments and private engineering colleges across Karnataka for their government-quota seats.

How to prepare for KCET

Since your Class 12 marks count for half of your engineering rank, board exam preparation and KCET preparation are the same job. The PUC textbook is your main resource for both.

• Study your PUC textbooks thoroughly. KCET questions often come straight from textbook concepts and examples.
• Do not neglect 1st PUC. Both years are tested, and many students lose easy marks there.
• Attempt every question. There is no negative marking, so never leave a bubble blank.
• Use the 80 minutes well: do a quick first pass for easy questions, then return to calculations.
• Solve previous years’ KCET papers under timed conditions. Patterns and question styles repeat.
• Practice OMR marking. A single double-marked answer loses the mark. You can note each mock score and weak chapters in Kosuki as you go.

1. Visit the KEA website and read the information bulletin.
2. Register and fill in the online application, including study details used to check Karnataka candidate status.
3. Upload your photo, signature and documents.
4. Pay the fee online.
5. Complete any verification steps KEA asks for.
6. Download your admission ticket before the exam.
