NEET MDS (National Eligibility cum Entrance Test for Master of Dental Surgery) is the national entrance exam for MDS courses in India. It is conducted by the National Board of Examinations in Medical Sciences (NBEMS), and the NEET MDS rank is used for postgraduate dental seats in government, private and deemed dental colleges, and for Armed Forces dental seats.

What is NEET MDS?
NEET MDS is the single eligibility and ranking test for MDS admission across India. Earlier, states and universities ran their own dental PG tests. Now nearly every MDS seat is filled using the NEET MDS merit list. AIIMS and a few other institutes of national importance fill their MDS seats through INI-CET instead.
The exam checks what you learned in BDS, from general anatomy and pathology to every clinical dental specialty. It is a one-day, one-shift computer test.
NEET MDS eligibility
Read the NBEMS information bulletin carefully. The internship cut-off date is the rule that most often decides whether a final-year intern can apply.
- Degree: a BDS degree, or a provisional pass certificate, from a dental college recognized by the Dental Council of India.
- Registration: provisional or permanent registration with the Dental Council of India or a State Dental Council.
- Internship: one year of compulsory rotating internship completed by the cut-off date announced in that year’s bulletin.
- Nationality: Indian citizens, and NRI, OCI and PIO candidates and foreign nationals as allowed by the bulletin.
- There is no limit on attempts and no upper age limit.
NEET MDS exam pattern
The NEET MDS exam pattern has 240 multiple-choice questions, each with four options and one correct answer. The paper is split into two parts. In recent cycles NBEMS has made the parts time-bound, which means you must finish a part within its allotted time and cannot return to it later. Education portals report 75 minutes for Part A and 105 minutes for Part B in the recent pattern, but check the bulletin for the exact timings in your year.

NEET MDS marking scheme
Because Part B spreads questions evenly across about ten dental subjects, a weak specialty can pull your score down quickly. Balanced coverage matters more than depth in one favorite subject.
- Correct answer: plus 4 marks
- Wrong answer: minus 1 mark
- Unanswered: 0
- Each subject in Part B carries a roughly equal number of questions, so no specialty can be skipped
NEET MDS syllabus
The NEET MDS syllabus is the BDS curriculum prescribed by the Dental Council of India. NBEMS publishes a subject list with the bulletin. In practice, the most useful way to plan is by the two parts of the paper.
- Part A, basic sciences: general anatomy including embryology and histology, physiology and biochemistry, general pathology and microbiology, general and dental pharmacology
- Part A, medical subjects: general medicine, general surgery

NEET MDS result, cut-off and counseling
NBEMS publishes the NEET MDS result as a score and rank, typically about a month after the exam. You must reach the qualifying percentile for your category to take part in counseling. The qualifying percentile is announced with the result and has sometimes been lowered later to fill vacant seats.
The Medical Counselling Committee (MCC) conducts counseling for the 50 percent All India Quota seats, central institutions and deemed universities. States run their own counseling for state quota and private college seats. Armed Forces Medical Services dental seats also use NEET MDS ranks, with their own additional process.
How to prepare for NEET MDS
With 240 questions in 180 minutes, you have 45 seconds per question. That is fast. NEET MDS rewards quick recall of facts, classifications and clinical features more than long reasoning.
- Start with Part B subjects you studied in final year while they are fresh, then add Part A subjects in parallel.
- Make one-page summaries for each subject with classifications, instruments, materials properties and eponymous signs. Revise them repeatedly.
- Do not ignore general medicine and surgery in Part A. They are easier to score in than many students assume.
- Solve recalled NEET MDS and INI-CET MDS questions from recent years to learn the question style.
- Practice full mocks in 3 hours, and practice working part by part so that the time-bound format feels normal.
- With minus 1 for a wrong answer, attempt only when you can eliminate two options. Track your accuracy in each mock.
- Log subject-wise mock scores, for example in Kosuki, and use them to pick your final revision topics.
How to apply for NEET MDS
- Check natboard.edu.in for the NEET MDS information bulletin and read the eligibility section first.
- Register online and complete the application with BDS, registration and internship details.
- Upload your photograph, signature and required documents in the specified format.
- Pay the fee online and submit before the deadline.
- Correct errors in the edit window if one is given, and download the admit card before exam day.
NEET MDS FAQs
How many questions are there in NEET MDS?
NEET MDS has 240 multiple-choice questions for a total of 960 marks: 100 in Part A and 140 in Part B.
Is there negative marking in NEET MDS?
Yes. A correct answer earns 4 marks and a wrong answer loses 1 mark. Unattempted questions get zero.
Can BDS interns apply for NEET MDS?
Yes, as long as the internship will be completed by the cut-off date given in that year’s bulletin.
Is NEET MDS computer based?
Yes. It is a computer-based test held in a single session, in English only.
Does AIIMS accept NEET MDS scores?
No. AIIMS and some other institutes of national importance admit MDS students through INI-CET.
Which part of NEET MDS carries more marks?
Part B, the clinical dental subjects, has 140 questions worth 560 marks, compared with 100 questions and 400 marks in Part A.
