CMAT, the Common Management Admission Test, is a national entrance exam for admission to MBA and PGDM programs at AICTE-approved institutes across India. It is conducted by the National Testing Agency (NTA) once a year as a computer-based test.

The CMAT exam has 100 multiple-choice questions worth 400 marks, spread across five sections, and runs for three hours. It is often seen as a more predictable paper than CAT, with a larger general awareness component. Results are reported as scores and percentiles, which participating colleges use for their own admission rounds.

What is CMAT?

CMAT was started by AICTE to give management institutes a common, standard test. Since 2019 NTA has run it. The test checks numerical ability, reasoning, English and awareness of business and current events, plus a section on innovation and entrepreneurship.

A large number of AICTE-approved B-schools and university departments accept CMAT scores, including well-known names such as JBIMS Mumbai, K J Somaiya, SIMSREE and Great Lakes. In Maharashtra, CMAT is also accepted alongside the state CET for MBA admissions through the state process. Each institute announces its own cut-offs and selection rounds.

CMAT eligibility

CMAT eligibility is open to most graduates. Unlike CAT, there is no minimum percentage for the test itself, though colleges may set their own.

A bachelor’s degree in any discipline from a recognized university.
Final-year bachelor’s students whose results are declared before admissions begin can also apply.
Candidates must be Indian nationals.
There is no upper age limit.
Institutes may apply extra conditions, such as minimum graduation marks, at the admission stage.

CMAT exam pattern

The CMAT exam pattern gives equal weight to all five sections. There are no sectional time limits, so you can move between sections and plan your own order within the three hours. The Innovation and Entrepreneurship section was optional when it was introduced, but it is now compulsory and counts toward your total.

CMAT marking scheme

Correct answer: plus 4 marks.
Wrong answer: minus 1 mark.
Unattempted question: 0 marks.
All questions are multiple choice with four options.
NTA releases a provisional answer key and response sheet, with a short window to challenge answers before the final key.

CMAT syllabus

The CMAT syllabus is close to that of other MBA entrance tests, with two extra areas that reward regular reading.

Quantitative Techniques and Data Interpretation: arithmetic, number systems, algebra, geometry, mensuration, probability, and data interpretation from tables and charts.
Logical Reasoning: series, analogies, coding-decoding, blood relations, directions, seating arrangement, syllogisms and statement-based reasoning.
Language Comprehension: reading comprehension, grammar, vocabulary, sentence correction, para-jumbles and fill in the blanks.
General Awareness: current affairs, business news, economy, awards, sports, history, geography, polity and general science.
Innovation and Entrepreneurship: startups and their founders, business models, entrepreneurship concepts, government schemes for startups and MSMEs, intellectual property basics and innovation case questions.

CMAT result and admissions

The CMAT result is usually declared by NTA within a few weeks of the exam. The scorecard shows section-wise scores, the total out of 400 and your percentile. It is valid for admissions in the academic year it is issued for.

NTA does not run counseling. After the result, you apply separately to each college that accepts the CMAT score. Colleges shortlist candidates and then hold group discussions, written ability tests or personal interviews. Many institutes accept CAT, XAT, MAT and ATMA as well, so check which score each one prefers.

How to prepare for CMAT

With 100 questions in 180 minutes, CMAT gives you almost two minutes per question. That is generous compared with CAT, so the real challenge is accuracy and breadth rather than raw speed.

Treat General Awareness and Innovation and Entrepreneurship as scoring sections. Together they carry 160 marks and reward steady reading of business news, startup stories and government schemes.
Keep a weekly current affairs and business notes file, and revise it in the final month.
For Quant, focus on arithmetic and data interpretation. The level is moderate, so clean basics go a long way.
In Logical Reasoning, practice the standard puzzle types until they feel routine.
Mind the negative marking. With plus 4 and minus 1, an educated guess after eliminating two options is usually worth taking, but random guessing is not.
Solve previous years’ CMAT papers released by NTA and take full-length mocks to set your section order.
Many students log section scores from each mock in Kosuki to check where marks are being lost.

How to apply for CMAT

Go to cmat.nta.nic.in when NTA opens registration, usually a few months before the exam.
Register with your email and mobile number, then fill in personal and academic details.
Choose your exam cities in order of preference.
Upload your photograph, signature and any category or PwD certificates.
Pay the fee online and download the confirmation page.
Download the city intimation slip and then the admit card when NTA releases them.

CMAT FAQs

Is there negative marking in CMAT?

Yes. Each correct answer gets 4 marks and each wrong answer loses 1 mark. Unattempted questions carry no penalty.

How many sections are there in CMAT?

There are five sections of 20 questions each: Quantitative Techniques and Data Interpretation, Logical Reasoning, Language Comprehension, General Awareness, and Innovation and Entrepreneurship.

Is the Innovation and Entrepreneurship section compulsory in CMAT?

Yes. It was optional when introduced, but it is now compulsory and counts toward the total of 400 marks.
