XAT, the Xavier Aptitude Test, is a national MBA entrance exam conducted by XLRI Jamshedpur on behalf of the Xavier Association of Management Institutes. Its score is used for admission to XLRI and to management programs at many other business schools across India.

The XAT exam is a three-hour computer-based test held once a year, usually in the first week of January. It stands apart from other MBA tests because of its Decision Making section and an unusual marking rule that penalizes you for skipping too many questions. Your XAT percentile is followed by each institute’s own interviews and selection rounds.

What is XAT?

XAT has been run by XLRI for decades and is one of the main MBA entrance tests in India, alongside CAT. Besides XLRI’s own programs in Jamshedpur and Delhi, the XAT score is accepted by institutes such as XIM University Bhubaneswar, SPJIMR, IMT, Great Lakes and a long list of other schools. The official XAT website publishes the full list of participating institutes.

The test is designed to check reasoning, judgment and verbal skills more than speed alone. The Decision Making section, in particular, asks you to choose the most sensible course of action in business and ethical situations.

XAT eligibility

XAT eligibility is broad. XLRI does not set a minimum percentage for taking the test.

• A bachelor’s degree of at least three years, or equivalent, in any discipline.
• Final-year bachelor’s students can apply if they will complete the degree before the program starts.
• There is no age limit.
• Participating institutes may set their own academic cut-offs for shortlisting.

XAT exam pattern

The XAT exam pattern has two parts. Part 1 contains three sections with a combined 170 minutes and no sectional time limits, so you can choose your own order. Part 2 is a 10-minute General Knowledge section. Question counts can shift slightly from year to year. The split below is the one used in recent cycles.

XAT marking scheme

The XAT marking scheme has one rule that surprises many students: leaving too many questions blank costs marks. Plan for it before exam day.

• Correct answer: plus 1 mark.
• Wrong answer in Part 1: minus 0.25 marks.
• Unattempted questions in Part 1: the first 8 carry no penalty; each one after that costs 0.10 marks.
• General Knowledge: no negative marking for wrong or skipped answers.
• GK marks are not used to calculate the XAT percentile, but institutes may consider them at later selection stages.
• The essay is no longer part of the test. XLRI may ask for writing or essay-type tasks during its interview stage.

XAT syllabus

• Verbal Ability and Logical Reasoning: reading comprehension (often dense and abstract), critical reasoning, para-jumbles, vocabulary in context, poem-based questions and analogy-style reasoning.
• Decision Making: case-based sets on business, ethics and people management, plus arithmetic-heavy decision sets that look like DI or scheduling puzzles.
• Quantitative Ability and Data Interpretation: arithmetic, algebra, geometry, number systems, permutations and probability, and table- or chart-based data sets. The level is often higher than CAT quant.
• General Knowledge: a mix of static GK and current affairs, including business, economy, awards and world events.

XAT result and selection process

The XAT result is usually declared in late January. The scorecard shows your section-wise and overall percentile, with the GK score reported separately. The score is valid for the admission cycle it was taken for.

Each institute then issues its own shortlist. XLRI calls shortlisted candidates for its personal interview stage, which may include a group activity or written task. Other institutes run their own group discussions, written ability tests and interviews. Final selection usually blends the XAT score, the interview, academic record, work experience and diversity factors.

How to prepare for XAT

XAT preparation overlaps with CAT for quant and verbal, but Decision Making and the unattempted-question penalty need separate practice.

• Practice Decision Making from XAT previous years’ papers. Look for the option that is fair, practical and considers all stakeholders, not the most dramatic one.
• Plan your 170 minutes. Many students start with Decision Making or Verbal, where they are faster, and leave the heaviest quant for later.
• Aim to attempt all but about 8 questions in Part 1. After that, a reasoned guess costs less on average than a blank.
• Verbal in XAT is dense. Read editorials and long essays daily and practice critical reasoning questions.
• Quant can be tougher than CAT. Strengthen algebra, geometry and number systems, not just arithmetic.
• Keep a short GK routine: 15 minutes of business and current affairs a day in the last three months.
• Take full-length XAT mocks with the real time split and log your section scores, for example in Kosuki, to track progress.

How to apply for XAT

1. Register on xatonline.in when registration opens, usually in July or August.
2. Fill in personal, academic and work experience details.
3. Select your preferred test cities and the XLRI programs you wish to apply to.
4. Upload your photograph and signature.
5. Pay the XAT fee and any separate program fees for XLRI online.
6. Download the admit card from the website in December and apply separately to other XAT-accepting institutes as required.
