NMAT by GMAC is a computer-adaptive management entrance exam run by the Graduate Management Admission Council (GMAC), the organization behind the GMAT. It is the main entrance test for MBA programs at NMIMS and is accepted by a few dozen other business schools in India and abroad.

The NMAT exam has 108 questions in 120 minutes across three sections, with no negative marking. It is offered over a testing window of several weeks, usually from early November to December, and you can take it up to three times in a testing year. In India you take it at a test center, and candidates outside India can take an online proctored version.

What is NMAT?

NMAT was originally created by NMIMS and is now run by GMAC. It is used by NMIMS campuses in Mumbai, Bengaluru, Hyderabad and other cities, and by schools such as ISB (for some programs), S P Jain Institute of Management and Research, K J Somaiya Institute of Management and FLAME University. GMAC says the NMAT is accepted by more than 50 business schools.

Two features make NMAT different from most Indian MBA tests. It is adaptive, so the difficulty of your next question depends on how you answered earlier ones. And you control the schedule: you book your own test date and slot within the window, and you choose the order of the three sections.

NMAT eligibility

GMAC keeps the test itself open. Minimum academic requirements are set by each school when you apply for admission.

• Graduates, and students in the final year of a bachelor’s degree, can register.
• There is no age limit for the test.
• NMIMS and other schools set their own requirements, commonly a minimum graduation percentage. Check each school’s admission page.
• Candidates outside India can take the online version of the test.

NMAT exam pattern

The NMAT exam pattern has three sections of 36 questions each. Each section has its own time limit. Once you finish or run out of time in a section, you cannot go back to it. You choose the section order before the test starts.

NMAT marking scheme and scoring

• There is no negative marking. Wrong and unanswered questions simply do not add to your score.
• Because the test is adaptive, harder questions answered correctly are worth more in scaled scoring. You do not get a fixed number of marks per question.
• Each section is scored from 12 to 120, for a total scaled score from 36 to 360.
• An unofficial score is shown right after the test, and the official score is usually sent within about 48 hours.
• If you take NMAT more than once, you can choose which score to send to schools.

NMAT syllabus

• Language Skills: reading comprehension, grammar and sentence correction, vocabulary, analogies, para-jumbles and fill in the blanks.
• Quantitative Skills: arithmetic, number systems, algebra, geometry, mensuration, probability, and data interpretation and data sufficiency.
• Logical Reasoning: critical reasoning, arrangements, puzzles, coding-decoding, series, syllogisms and statement-conclusion questions.

NMAT result and admissions

Your NMAT result is available soon after the test, so you know your score before the testing window closes. That helps you decide whether a retake is worth it. An NMAT score is valid only for the application cycle in which you take it.

Each school sets its own cut-off and selection process. NMIMS, for example, shortlists candidates based on NMAT scores and then conducts further rounds such as case discussion, writing ability and personal interviews. Apply to each school on its own admission portal, and check its deadlines, as they often fall close to the end of the NMAT window.

How to prepare for NMAT

NMAT preparation is about accuracy under tight sectional timing. With no negative marking, you should never leave a question blank.

• Answer every question. When time is running out in a section, mark your best guesses rather than leaving questions unanswered.
• Language Skills gives you under a minute per question. Build fast grammar and vocabulary recognition with short daily drills.
• Quantitative Skills has the most time, 52 minutes, and the heaviest calculations. Focus on arithmetic and data interpretation, and practice without a calculator.
• Logical Reasoning rewards pattern familiarity. Solve many standard puzzle sets and critical reasoning questions.
• Practice with adaptive mocks, including GMAC’s official practice tests, so the changing difficulty does not throw you.
• Decide your section order early and keep it the same in every mock.
• Use your first attempt as a real test and plan a retake if needed. Tracking each attempt and mock in Kosuki can make the comparison easier.

How to apply for NMAT

1. Create an account on the official NMAT by GMAC website when registration opens, usually in August.
2. Fill in your personal and academic details and pay the registration fee.
3. Select the schools you want your scores sent to.
4. Book your test date, time slot and test center (or the online test if you are outside India).
5. If you take the online test from abroad, run the system check before test day.
6. Download your admit card or appointment confirmation, and reschedule or retake within the rules if needed.
