AP ECET (Andhra Pradesh Engineering Common Entrance Test) is the state exam for lateral entry into the second year of BE, BTech and BPharm programs in Andhra Pradesh. It is conducted by JNTU Anantapur on behalf of the Andhra Pradesh State Council of Higher Education (APSCHE), and it is open to diploma holders in engineering and pharmacy and to BSc graduates with Mathematics.

The test is a three-hour computer-based exam of 200 questions, with half the paper drawn from your own diploma branch. There is no negative marking. What is AP ECET?

AP ECET gives diploma holders a direct route into the second year of an engineering or pharmacy degree, so they do not repeat the first year. Colleges across Andhra Pradesh, both university and private, fill their lateral entry seats through it.

The exam has separate papers for different streams. Engineering diploma holders take the paper for their own branch, such as civil, mechanical, electrical, electronics, computer science, chemical, mining, metallurgy, agricultural engineering, ceramic technology or biotechnology. The paper is in English. Pharmacy diploma holders and BSc Mathematics graduates take their own papers.

AP ECET eligibility

Eligibility is laid down in the instruction booklet on the official site. In recent cycles it has looked like this.

Engineering stream: a three-year (or equivalent) diploma in engineering or technology from a recognized board, with a minimum aggregate, usually 45 percent for general candidates and 40 percent for reserved categories.
Pharmacy stream: a diploma in pharmacy from a recognized institution.
BSc Mathematics stream: a BSc degree with Mathematics as one of the main subjects, with a minimum aggregate usually set at 45 percent (40 percent for reserved categories).
You must meet Andhra Pradesh local or non-local status rules for admission.
There is no upper age limit.
Final-year students can usually apply, provided they pass before admission.

AP ECET exam pattern

Every paper has 200 multiple-choice questions for 200 marks, answered on a computer in three hours. The structure depends on your stream. For engineering diploma holders, half the paper is the branch subject.

AP ECET marking scheme and qualifying marks

The AP ECET marking scheme is straightforward, and there is a minimum score to be ranked.

Each correct answer earns 1 mark.
There is no negative marking.
To qualify for a rank, general and BC candidates usually need at least 25 percent, which is 50 out of 200.
SC and ST candidates have no minimum qualifying mark, but must still meet the other rules for admission.

AP ECET syllabus

The AP ECET syllabus is based on the diploma curriculum of the State Board of Technical Education and Training, Andhra Pradesh. The official site publishes a detailed syllabus for each stream. In broad terms, the engineering papers cover the following.

Mathematics: matrices, trigonometry, complex numbers, coordinate geometry, differential calculus and its applications, integral calculus, differential equations.
Physics: units and dimensions, vectors, kinematics, friction, work, power and energy, simple harmonic motion, heat and thermodynamics, sound, electricity and magnetism, modern physics.
Chemistry: atomic structure, chemical bonding, solutions, acids and bases, electrochemistry, water treatment, corrosion, polymers, fuels, environmental chemistry.
Branch paper: core subjects from your diploma program, such as surveying and structures for civil, thermal and manufacturing for mechanical, or programming and networks for computer science.

AP ECET result, rank and counseling

The result is published on the official site as a rank card with your marks and rank. Rank is based on your AP ECET score, and ties are broken using rules in the instruction booklet.

Admission then happens through online counseling run by the state’s technical education department. The usual steps are registration and fee payment, certificate verification, web option entry for colleges and branches, seat allotment and reporting to the college. Counseling generally runs in phases, and seats left after one phase are offered in the next. The rank alone does not guarantee a seat; it depends on your category, local status and the options you enter.

How to prepare for AP ECET

Half the engineering paper is your branch subject, and there is no negative marking. Your plan should reflect both facts.

Give your branch paper the most time. It is worth 100 marks, and most of it comes straight from your diploma textbooks.
Treat Mathematics as the second priority. At 50 marks, it can decide your rank. Practice calculus and differential equations until the standard problems are routine.
Physics and Chemistry are 25 marks each and largely factual. Short daily revision works better than long occasional sessions.
Solve previous AP ECET papers for your stream and note which topics repeat. Many questions follow familiar patterns.
Take full-length mock tests on a computer with a three-hour timer. That is 200 questions, so aim to average under a minute each.

How to apply for AP ECET

Read the instruction booklet on cets.apsche.ap.gov.in/ECET and check eligibility for your stream.
Pay the registration fee online first, as the portal asks for payment before the form.
Fill in the application form with your diploma or degree details and choose your stream and test center preferences.
Upload your photo and signature and submit the form.
Print the filled application for your records.
Download the hall ticket when it is released and check your stream, session and center.

Is there negative marking in AP ECET?

No. Each correct answer earns 1 mark and wrong answers are not penalized.
