Bihar DCECE (Diploma Certificate Entrance Competitive Examination) is the state entrance test for admission to diploma courses in Bihar’s government and private polytechnics. It is conducted by the Bihar Combined Entrance Competitive Examination Board (BCECEB), and the engineering paper, called PE, leads to three-year diploma programs in branches such as civil, mechanical, electrical and computer science engineering.

The exam is taken after Class 10, and the PE paper tests Class 10 level Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics. There is no negative marking, which changes how you should approach the paper. What is Bihar DCECE?

DCECE is the common entrance route into diploma programs in Bihar. BCECEB runs it once a year and uses it for more than one kind of course. The PE paper is for polytechnic engineering. Separate papers, usually called PM and PMM, are used for paramedical diploma and certificate courses at intermediate and matric level. A part-time engineering diploma stream has also been offered in recent cycles through the same exam.

This guide focuses on the PE paper, which is what most students mean when they search for the Bihar polytechnic entrance exam. If you are applying for a paramedical course, read the prospectus for your paper, because its subjects and eligibility differ.

Bihar DCECE eligibility

Eligibility is set in the prospectus each year, so always confirm it there before you apply. For the PE paper, recent prospectuses have asked for the following.

• You must have passed Class 10 (matric) or an equivalent exam from a recognized board. Students appearing in Class 10 in the same year have usually been allowed to apply.
• Mathematics and Science should be among your Class 10 subjects.
• A minimum aggregate, usually 35 percent, in the qualifying exam has been required in recent years.
• There has been no upper age limit for the PE paper.
• Bihar domicile matters for reserved seats and state quotas, so keep your residence certificate ready.

Bihar DCECE exam pattern

The PE paper is a single objective test of 90 questions answered on an OMR sheet. Each subject carries equal weight, so no one subject can be skipped. The paper is bilingual in Hindi and English, and you get 2 hours 15 minutes to finish it, which works out to about one and a half minutes per question.

DCECE marking scheme

The DCECE marking scheme is simple and generous. Because nothing is deducted for a wrong answer, an unanswered question is a mark you have given away.

• Each correct answer earns 5 marks.
• There is no negative marking for wrong answers.
• Unattempted questions score zero.
• Rank is based on your total out of 450, with category ranks shown on the rank card.

Bihar DCECE syllabus

The DCECE syllabus for PE follows the Class 10 science and mathematics curriculum of the Bihar School Examination Board and NCERT. If you studied Class 10 with care, you already know most of it. The difference is speed and the need to recall formulas quickly.

• Physics: motion, force and laws of motion, gravitation, work and energy, sound, light (reflection and refraction), human eye, electricity, magnetic effects of current, sources of energy.
• Chemistry: matter and its states, atoms and molecules, structure of the atom, chemical reactions and equations, acids, bases and salts, metals and non-metals, carbon compounds, periodic classification.
• Mathematics: number systems, polynomials, linear and quadratic equations, arithmetic progressions, triangles, coordinate geometry, trigonometry and its applications, circles, mensuration (areas and volumes), statistics and probability.

DCECE result, rank card and counseling

BCECEB publishes the DCECE result on its website as a rank card. The rank card usually shows subject-wise marks, total marks, overall rank and category rank. Results have typically come out a few weeks after the exam.

Admission then happens through online counseling run by the board. You register, fill your choices of college and branch in order of preference, and seats are allotted by rank, category and availability. There are usually several rounds, followed by a mop-up round for vacant seats. After allotment, you report to the college or verification center with original documents. Watch the notice board on the official site, because deadlines between rounds are short.

How to prepare for Bihar DCECE

With 30 questions per subject and no negative marking, the best strategy is broad coverage and full attempts. Here is a plan that fits the DCECE exam pattern.

• Start with your Class 10 NCERT or Bihar Board textbooks. Read every chapter in the syllabus once before you touch guidebooks.
• Make one page of formulas each for Physics and Mathematics, and one page of reactions and definitions for Chemistry. Revise these daily in the last month.
• Mathematics usually takes the most time. Practice trigonometry, mensuration and coordinate geometry until you can solve standard questions in under two minutes.
• Solve previous DCECE papers under a 2 hour 15 minute timer on an OMR-style sheet, so you learn to shade answers without losing time.
• Since there is no negative marking, answer every question. Mark the ones you are unsure of, finish the paper, then return to them. Never leave a bubble empty at the end.

How to apply for Bihar DCECE

1. Read the DCECE prospectus on bceceboard.bihar.gov.in and check the eligibility for your paper.
2. Register online with your mobile number and email, and note your registration number and password.
3. Fill in the application form, choose your paper (PE, PM or PMM) and exam district preferences.
4. Upload your photo, signature and any required certificates in the specified size and format.
5. Pay the application fee online and download the confirmation page.
6. Download the admit card when the board releases it and check every detail.
