TANCET (Tamil Nadu Common Entrance Test) is the state entrance test for MBA and MCA admissions in Tamil Nadu. It is conducted by Anna University through its Centre for Entrance Examinations, and the score is used for admission to university departments, government and aided colleges, and self-financing colleges across the state.

The MBA paper has 100 questions in five equal sections and carries a penalty for wrong answers. This guide explains the TANCET exam pattern, syllabus, eligibility and marking scheme, and how to prepare with accuracy in mind.

What is TANCET?

TANCET is Tamil Nadu’s common test for postgraduate management and computer applications programs. There are two separate papers: one for MBA and one for MCA. You can apply for one or both.

Admissions to M.E., M.Tech, M.Arch and M.Plan programs, which used to go through TANCET, now use a separate test called CEETA-PG. So if you are an engineering graduate looking at an M.Tech in Tamil Nadu, TANCET is no longer your exam for that.

TANCET eligibility

TANCET eligibility depends on the paper you choose. There is no upper age limit.

MBA: a bachelor’s degree of at least three years in any discipline from a recognized university.
MBA and MCA: at least 50 percent aggregate marks, with a relaxation to 45 percent for eligible reserved categories as listed in the official notice.
MCA: a bachelor’s degree such as BCA or a B.Sc in computer science or IT, or another degree with mathematics studied at the required level.
Final-year students can apply and are admitted if they meet the requirement when results are out.
Degrees earned through certain distance or open learning routes must meet the conditions in the brochure.

TANCET exam pattern

The TANCET MBA exam pattern has 100 multiple-choice questions in five sections of 20 questions each. The test is written on an OMR sheet, and you have 2 hours in total, a little over one minute per question.

The MCA paper follows a different structure, with sections on quantitative ability, analytical reasoning, logical reasoning and computer awareness.

TANCET marking scheme

The TANCET marking scheme includes a penalty, which changes how you approach guessing.

One mark for each correct answer.
One-third of a mark deducted for each wrong answer.
No penalty for questions left blank.
Use a black ballpoint pen to fill the OMR sheet, and fill bubbles fully. Wrong or partial marking can cost you the answer.

TANCET syllabus

The TANCET MBA syllabus leans toward reasoning with numbers and reading in English. Business Situations is the section that sets TANCET apart from most other tests.

Analysis of Business Situations: short case passages about business decisions, followed by questions that ask you to classify each statement as a major objective, major factor, minor factor, assumption or unimportant issue.
Reading Comprehension: passages on business, economics, science and social topics, with inference and main-idea questions.
Quantitative Ability: arithmetic, algebra, geometry, mensuration, probability, permutations and combinations, and data interpretation.
Data Sufficiency: deciding whether given statements are enough to answer a question, covering quant and reasoning.
English Usage: grammar, error spotting, sentence correction, vocabulary and fill in the blanks.

TANCET result, scores and admissions

Anna University publishes the result online as a score and a percentile. The score is valid for admission in the same academic year.

Colleges accepting TANCET score include Anna University departments and affiliated colleges, the University of Madras, government and aided colleges, and a large number of self-financing institutes in Tamil Nadu. For state-quota seats, you register separately for the Tamil Nadu MBA and MCA counseling, where seats are allotted by merit and community category. Some private institutes also use the TANCET score in their own admission process.

How to prepare for TANCET

TANCET preparation is about accuracy more than raw speed. With a one-third penalty, three wrong guesses cancel out one correct answer. Answer questions you can narrow to two options, and skip ones where you have no idea.

Give extra time to Analysis of Business Situations and Data Sufficiency, since most students have not seen these formats before. Solve past TANCET papers from Anna University to learn the style. After every mock, count how many marks you lost to wrong answers. You can keep that count, and your preparation status, in Kosuki.

Practice two or three business situation passages a day and learn the five answer categories well.
Learn the standard data sufficiency answer options by heart so you do not waste time reading them in the exam.
Revise grammar rules for error spotting and sentence correction.
Practice filling an OMR sheet during mocks so bubbling does not eat into your time.
Keep each section to about 24 minutes, since all five carry equal marks.

Is there negative marking in TANCET?

Yes. One-third of a mark is deducted for every wrong answer in TANCET. Unanswered questions carry no penalty.
